The option to send external web links could revolutionize the messaging service of Instagram as the platform looks to encourage users to message within the app, rather than using other, external applications for messaging.
Any links posted with a URL will include a preview, whilst changes to the sending of photos and videos will fit in with how the majority of users take photos on their mobile phones. The updates will start with iOS users before moving on to Android users shortly after.
Direct messaging within Instagram is increasingly popular, with 375 million active users according to the most recent data published in April. That is still some way behind the likes of Facebook Messenger, with 1.2 billion active users, but it remains one of the biggest messaging apps in the world with an ever-increasing market share.
